Abstract

Shams-ul-Ulama Mirza Kalich Beg (1855-1929) is a prominent and an enlightened writer of early twentieth century Sindhi literature whose research, creative and scholarly contributions in the history of Sindhi literature are considered profound and foundational. He penned down in various genres of literature and filled in new colours with creative and scholarly efforts. This paper attempts to highlight Mirza Kalich Beg’s century was thnovels, translated literary works, stories, and dramas. The 20an era of change and modernization; Mirza Kalich Beg brought about change and modernity in Sindhi literature and criticized the status-quo. Mirza Kalich Beg’s translated works, plays, and novels especially Dila Ram and Zeenat were written in the context of the change and existing social conditions in order to provide direction and ground for the social change and new trends of the era to be followed by the Sindhi society. Mirza Kalich translated the master pieces of French, Roman, English and Greek literature including the famous works by William Shakespeare, Victor Hugo and Broken T Wessington. His literary writings especially the translations aimed at understanding the values, traditions and change taking place in different societies and to introduce it to Sindhi society. This study paper helps to understand Mirza Kalich Beg’s literary contribution in the sindhi language through his original and translated works in the field of fiction and Dramma.
