Abstract

The reagent 2-Hydroxyiminopropanoic acid was prepared and characterized by mass, FT-IR spectra. Its reaction
towards Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(II), Zn(II) and Mn(II) metal ions were examined through spectrophotometry. The reagent reacts
with metal ions immediately to form coloured complexes in aqueous methanol solution. The effect of pH and derivatizing reagent
concentration was examined on the colour reactions. The metal chelates obeyed the Beers'Law within the calibration range and
indicated stable complex formation. The reagent was used for the determination of copper from copper wires and iron from
pharmaceutical preparation.
