Abstract

Currently there exists many applications of tracking systems in everyday life of human being from tracking a vehicle, monitoring a patient in hospitals to tracking products in a manufacturing industry. It is due to the advancement in positioning technology, such as GPS (global positioning system). GPS was first developed for non-civilian purposes, however currently it has several civilian applications ranging from navigation to tracking and monitoring of people and everyday objects or handheld devices, such as mobile phones. In this paper, we have presented the design, implementation and testing of a location tracking system. The proposed approach is mainly software-based, however in order to increase its scope a hardware unit can be integrated as well. At the moment, we have used mobile phones embedded GPS capability to obtain the positioning information. The proposed system is mainly composed of five components. These are interlinked with each other to provide the location services to its users through an easy to use web interface. The implementation and testing of the proposed approach is also presented. The overall testing results are encouraging.
