Abstract

The morphohistological changes in the liver and ovary of the adult Asian striped catfish, Mystus vittatus was studied during different seasons of the year. Depending upon the sizes and cellular morphology, eight different types of oocytic stages were recognised in the ovary of Mystus vittatus. Four distinct phases of oogenesis were found to occur and simultaneously the liver was observed to undergo seasonal variation in their histological characteristics indicating changes in physiology and metabolic activities during the seasonal cycle of female reproduction. So, the seasonal changes of the liver histology could be well co-related with the cytological changes in the ovary.
