Abstract

Preliminary studies were conducted to evaluate salt tolerance in some amphidiploids species of Brassica at early seedling stage under controlled conditions (Gravel culture). In this regard ten locally adopted genotypes of Brassica (five genotypes of Brassica napus and five of Brassica juncea) were collected from NIA, Tandojam, NIFA Peshawar and ARI Tandojam. Three treatments were imposed (i.e. control, 6, and 9 dS/m NaCl). The results showed that among Brassica juncea species, Agati sarheen and Toria selection and in Brassica napus species, Wester & Dunckled showed better response to NaCl stress at early seedling stage. The genotype NIFA raya and Durr-e-NIFA of Brassica juncea and Brassica napus species were found more sensitive to NaCl stress, respectively. The physiological studies with respect to osmotic adjustment showed that almost all the genotypes had enhanced proline accumulation however in tolerant genotypes the relative increase (%) was higher. It was also observed that the tolerant genotypes had Higher K/Na ratio as compared to sensitive ones
