PERCEPTIONS OF STUDENTS TOWARDS MADRASSA SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN

Abstract

Madrassa system of education with long history is providing religious education in Pakistan. For some students, the only source of formal education is Madrassas, while they are serving supplementary for others. In the current criticism by western media, the perceptions of students towards Madrassa system of education carry a great significance.

For this study a sample of 500 students was randomly selected and data were collected through survey method, questionnaire and focus group discussion tools. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Non parametric test chi-square was used for statistical analysis.

It was found that students are satisfied with Madrassa system of education. The Madrassa system is better than Government system of education. Madrassa system of education does not provide job opportunities equal modern education system. Madrassa system of education does not impart education to face global challenges. The students are satisfied with curriculum and teachers of Madrassa system of education. The students urged that Madrassa system of education should be integrated with modern system of education and pointed out that government is not serious to integrate Madrassa system of education with modern system of education. Madrassa organizers oppose the integration of Madrassa system of education with modern system of education due to communication gaps and misunderstanding. Madrassa system of education is peace loving and hates extremism. The suggestions are presented at the end of the paper.
