Abstract

To investigate the origin of joints present in the north-central Pennines, their distribution, orientation and geometry have been studied in detail. Joints were first mapped in Namurian grit and this work has been extended to the Palaeozoic inliers of the Askrigg Block and folded country of the South Craven Lowlands. All the joint sets present in the area and classified in this study are product of the Hercynian deformation. This study has also helped to establish the relationship between the stress pattern of block and basin areas. A comparison of the stress patterns of Namurian grit and the Dinantian limestone suggests that they had been subjected to the same stress field.
