Parallel Processing of Multimedia Algorithms

Abstract

This paper discusses an approach for parallelization of multimedia algorithms on multi-core and many-core systems. The parallelism is already available in these algorithms; however, exploiting it efficiently is a challenging task. Existing sequential implementations of multimedia algorithms can be parallelized through several models. We discuss a coarse-grain approach that allows a significant speed-up in terms of execution time. Furthermore, the paper also presents a case study that is based on a JPEG algorithm.
