Abstract

The incompressible laminar flows of Newtonian fluid in sudden expansion channel are investigated. To seek the steady– state solution, a finite element time–marching algorithm, a so called, semi–implicit Taylor–Galerkin/pressure–correction scheme is employed. In contrast to vortex enhancement in expansion channel with increasing inertiaa suppression of recirculation region in both salient corner and the lip of the expansion is observed in expansion channel. The numerical predictions are compared with the experimental and other numerical results available in literature. The vortex length, recirculation flow rate and surpluspressure reduction in the expansion geometry are considered to analyse the consequences of fluid inertia
