Abstract

Some aspects of breeding biology of Dahi, Labeo calbasu (Hamilton) from Keenjhar Lake (District Thatta), Sindh were studied in terms of sex dimorphism, gonadosomatic index (GSI), ova diameter and fecundity during (March 2006 to February 2007). The values of both ova diameter and GSI showed one peak during June 1.30 and 18.60 and 1.66 in female and male respectively. It indicated that the fish L. calbasu breeds once in a year in the month of June. The estimation of fecundity was based upon 15 mature fishes ranged from 33.0 to 48.2 cm and 485g to 1475g in total length and weight respectively. The number of ova per gram of body weight was 262.5 eggs and the number of ova per gram ovary weight was 1564.4 eggs. The fecundity data were plotted against their respective length, weight and gonad weight. The fecundity-gonad weight relationships showed better relationship as compared to fecundity-total length and fecundity-body weight relationship.
