Performance of Agriculture Sector in Pakistan: A Critical Evaluation of Policy Framework

Abstract
This study seeks to identify and critically analyze the factors of performance and underperformance of agriculture sector in past several decades in the country. For this, study reviewed extant literature in first stage and subsequently collected data from secondary sources to answer central research questions. Findings reveal various important factors that cause underperformance of the agriculture sector. Study identified key factors, amongst others, population growth, lack of equitable and transparent agriculture credit facility, corruptibility of formal lending institutions, lack of equitable distribution of fertile land among the nation and farmers lacking orientation to modern equipments, methods and inputs. In the last, study discusses the main implications for government, lending institutions, landlords and other stakeholders.
